Mud, bare patches, and compacted soil. Here's how to fix it.

There are spots in almost every Australian backyard where the lawn just will not grow. The gate entry. The path to the clothesline. The track the dog runs every afternoon. The area under the trampoline. These spots are not cursed they are compacted. And compaction is one of the most fixable problems in lawn care once you understand what is actually happening beneath the surface.

What compaction actually does to your lawn

Healthy soil has structure air pockets, biological activity, and space for water and nutrients to move through it. When soil is compressed repeatedly by foot traffic, pets, or heavy use, that structure collapses. The soil particles are forced together, eliminating the air gaps and reducing the space for water to penetrate and roots to grow.

The result is a hard, dense surface that water runs off rather than soaks into. Grass roots cannot push through it. Nutrients sit on top rather than reaching the root zone. The turf thins out, stops recovering from wear, and eventually disappears leaving bare soil that turns to mud every time it rains and dust every time it dries out.

Compaction also makes every other lawn care product you apply less effective. Fertiliser that cannot reach the root zone does nothing. A wetting agent applied to structurally collapsed soil has less to work with. Fixing compaction is not just about the bare patch it unlocks the performance of everything else you apply.

How to tell if compaction is your problem

Push a screwdriver or garden fork into the affected area. In healthy soil it should go in with moderate pressure to a depth of 10cm or more. If it barely penetrates, or requires significant force to push in, the soil is compacted. Other signs include water pooling or running off rather than soaking in, grass that thins progressively despite fertilising, and hard, cracked soil surface in dry weather that turns slick and muddy when wet.

The fix: aeration first, then soil biology

Aeration is the mechanical step that breaks up compacted soil. For small areas a gate entry, a worn path a garden fork pushed in to 10 to 15cm depth and rocked back and forth at intervals of 10cm across the entire area is sufficient. For larger sections, a coring machine hired for a day will do the job faster and more thoroughly. The goal is to open up channels in the soil that allow air, water, and roots to move again.

Aeration on its own opens the channels. What you put into those channels determines how quickly and completely the soil recovers.

The products that rebuild compacted soil

Once the soil is aerated, the priority is rebuilding the biological environment that was destroyed by compaction and ensuring water can now penetrate and stay where it is needed.

Base is the foundation product here. It contains Tasmanian Bull Kelp which conditions soil biology the microbial activity that creates and maintains soil structure over time. Applied at 120ml per 100m2 and watered in immediately after aeration, it goes directly into the channels you have just opened and starts rebuilding the environment that healthy roots need. This is the product that addresses the cause, not just the symptom.

Soak addresses the water repellency that almost always accompanies compaction. Even after aeration, soil that has been compressed for a long time often has hydrophobic characteristics water beads on the surface rather than penetrating. Soak at 200ml per 100m2 breaks that repellency and ensures every watering and every rainfall is actually reaching the root zone rather than running off. Apply with Base and water in immediately.

Vital stimulates the root development needed for the grass to spread back into the affected area. Applied at 100ml per 100m2 to the soil layer and watered in immediately, it gives the root system the signal to push into the newly opened soil. Without active root stimulation, grass is slow to colonise repaired compacted areas even when the soil condition improves.

Managing the cause while the lawn recovers

If the compaction is in a genuinely high-traffic area a gate entry, a dog run, a path the lawn will re-compact if nothing changes. A few practical options while the grass recovers:

Redirect foot traffic temporarily with a temporary barrier or garden edge. For permanent high-traffic entries, pavers or stepping stones through the area take the pressure off the turf while still maintaining a lawn on either side. For dog runs, a section of gravel or bark chip gives them a surface to run on without destroying the grass. These are not defeats they are smart decisions that let the lawn recover and perform where it actually can.

Once the lawn is recovering

When you can see new leaf growth spreading into the repaired area typically 3 to 4 weeks after treatment in the warmer months introduce the leaf layer. Surge at 200ml per 100m2 as a foliar spray with 2 hours dwell time before watering in pushes the growth that fills the gap. Vivid at 200ml per 100m2 applied the same way restores the colour to the new leaf growth.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my lawn is compacted or just dry?

Can I fix compaction without a machine?

Will Soak fix compaction on its own?

My dog destroys the same patch every day. Is there any point fixing it?
Worth fixing the soil, but manage the cause at the same time. Aerate, apply Base, Soak, and Vital, and either redirect the dog temporarily or put a surface down in their run that takes the pressure off the turf. The lawn will recover if the soil is right it just cannot compete with daily concentrated traffic indefinitely.

How long does it take for a compacted area to recover?
With aeration and the right soil products applied consistently, most areas show visible improvement within 3 to 4 weeks in the warmer months. Full recovery to dense, healthy turf can take 6 to 8 weeks. In winter, when warm-season grasses are not actively growing, allow longer and focus on soil preparation so the lawn is ready to push when temperatures rise.
