Not sure which lawn product is right for you? Answer 4 questions and find out.

Walk into any hardware store and you will find a wall of lawn products. Bags, bottles, granules, liquids. Every one of them promises results. Most Australian homeowners pick something that looks right, apply it, and wait. A few weeks later the lawn looks the same. So they try something else. The problem is not effort. The problem is that most people are treating the symptom they can see, not the cause underneath it.

Why picking the wrong product is so easy to do

A patchy, yellowing lawn that does not respond to fertiliser looks almost identical to a lawn that is waterlogged, or one that has compacted soil stopping nutrient uptake, or one that is simply iron deficient. The surface tells you almost nothing useful. What matters is what is happening at the soil layer, the root zone, and the leaf layer.

Most lawn products are labelled by what they contain, not by the problem they solve. That puts the diagnosis work on you. If you do not know what is causing your lawn to struggle, a product label is not going to tell you. This is why people spend money on fertiliser when what their lawn actually needs is a wetting agent. Or they chase colour when the real issue is the soil is not able to hold water long enough for any product to work.

Getting the diagnosis right first changes everything. The right product on a well-prepared lawn works fast and visibly. The wrong product on a poorly prepared lawn does almost nothing.

The 4 questions that cut through the guesswork

The Turf & Surf lawn quiz asks 4 questions. Each one is designed to identify which layer of your lawn is the actual problem.

1. Does water pool on your lawn or run straight off?
This identifies hydrophobic soil. When water cannot penetrate the surface it does not matter what you apply — nothing reaches the root zone. This is one of the most common problems in Australian lawns and one of the least diagnosed.

2. Has your lawn been through heat stress, drought, or heavy use recently?
Turf that has been through a difficult season is not just unhealthy — it has often lost the biological activity in the soil that allows recovery. Feeding a stressed lawn the same way you feed a healthy one does not work. It needs a different approach.

3. Is your lawn actively growing or has growth slowed significantly?
This separates lawns that need building from lawns that need maintaining. Growth rate tells you how functional the soil and root system currently is.

4. Is the problem colour, or is the lawn also thin and patchy?
Colour and density are different problems. A lawn that is thin and patchy has a soil or root issue. A lawn that is dense but dull is usually missing iron and trace elements at the leaf layer. Treating both the same way gives you average results on both.

What the quiz recommends and why

Based on your answers, the quiz points you to one of 4 outcomes.

Soak is recommended when your single clear problem is hydrophobic soil. Water is running off or pooling, but the lawn is otherwise reasonable. One product, one problem, fast result.

Starter Pack is recommended for lawns that need the full soil foundation built. Soak to open the soil, Vital to stimulate the root zone, and Surge to push growth once the pathway is open. This is the starting point for most Australian lawns that have never had a structured program.

Recovery Pack is recommended for lawns that have been through significant stress and are not responding to standard treatment. Soak, Base, and Vital work together to rebuild the soil biology and root environment before any growth program can take effect. You cannot push a damaged lawn into performance. You have to rebuild it first.

Vivid is recommended when your lawn is in reasonable shape but dull in colour. The soil is functional, growth is acceptable, but the turf is lacking that deep green that comes from chelated iron and trace elements at the leaf layer. This is most common in the cooler months when colour fades but the soil program is sound.

Start with the soil

Every Turf & Surf product is designed around one principle: nothing works until the soil works. A fertiliser that cannot penetrate a hydrophobic surface does nothing. An iron product on a lawn with compacted, depleted soil gives you a temporary colour hit and no lasting result. The quiz is built on this logic. It does not ask what you want your lawn to look like. It asks what is standing in the way of your lawn performing the way it should.

If you have already spent money on products that have not delivered, the answer is probably not a different product. It is the right product, applied to a lawn that is actually ready to receive it.

Take the quiz and find out which product your lawn actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the quiz take?
4 questions. Under a minute.

What if my lawn has more than one problem?
The quiz identifies the primary problem first. Once that is addressed, additional products can be layered in. Most lawns improve significantly once the soil layer is functioning correctly.

I have already tried fertiliser and it has not worked. Will this quiz tell me something different?
Quite possibly. If the soil is hydrophobic or the root zone is not active, fertiliser cannot do its job regardless of quality. The quiz is designed to identify exactly this scenario.

Is the quiz free?
Yes. No email required to see your result.

Can I use Soak and the Starter Pack together?
Soak is already included in the Starter Pack. If the quiz recommends the Starter Pack, Soak is part of it.
